Monuments from the Southern Black Sea coast
Abstract
The work presents the analysis of a couple of monuments from different settlements along the Southern Black Sea coast. Two artifacts have been discovered during underwater surveys in the region of Chernomorets. One of them is a copper bowl with a flat bottom, a tuğra-like ornament and an inscription in Arabic on the outer convex wall of the vessel. All the bowl, inscription and decoration are badly damaged. The author suggests variants of reading the text which is probably dating from 1713/1714. She compares the decoration with the similar one on 12 other pieces – sahans, trays and yataghans dating from 1685/1686 to 1812.
The second artifact from Chernomorets is a copper ibrik without an inscription. It could be dated from the 18th – 19th c. It is distinguished from many other known similar vessels with a conical or spherical body in the ratio of height to the very large diameter of the bottom, as well as the relatively straight spout that follows the body very close, does not reach the level of the mouth of the vessel and its curve up outside is very weak.
The inscription on a very beautiful tomb stone of a woman from December 3rd 1873 found in Pomorie has been dedicated to the wife of Izzet Bay – Hadidje Khanum. The author presents reading of the text, translation and comments on the epigraphic piece in question.
The last monument is an impressive slab with a short inscription. Probably it was on display in an important public building or a mosque in the town of Burgas. It is dating from 1860/1861.
