Abstract

The circumstances related to the discovery of the treasure remain unknown. According to unofficial information, it was found in the area of the presentday town of Kazanlak. The fragment of the treasure that has reached our days consists of two parts – jewelleries and gold coins. The coins are seven Byzantine hyperpyra – one of the so-called “John’s” type and six of Emperor John V Palaeologus. Probably the treasure was buried because of the Ottoman invasions in the Kazanlak region most probably shortly before 1388.
