The coins of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom and the Despotate of Dobruja (13th – 14th century), found outside the territories of modern Bulgaria, represent a significant interest to science. The aim of the present study is to systematize all findings and to acquaint the readers with the area of distribution of these medieval coins and their participation in the monetary circulation of territories outside the borders of modern Bulgaria. Many coin hoards finds published in various works between 1837 and 2020 are included. Some of the published hoards are still unknown to the Bulgarian numismatic literature. Additionally, newly discovered and previously unpublished coins from museum funds and private collections are included.
This study also introduces unpublished finds from Ukraine, Russia and the Czech Republic. The total number of documented coins found outside the territory of modern Bulgaria exceeds 5272.
All the data marked on the map represent the localisation of coin finds of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom and the Despotate of Dobruja, which are found outside of the territory of Bulgaria. The second map is added to illustrate the hoard finds of silver coins from modern Bulgaria. The analysis gives the opportunity to trace the relationships and locate the main road directions, which are important for Balkan and Central European world in the Middle Ages.
