Abstract

The number of discovered lead seals of the Bulgarian Tsardom dated between the late 12th and the late 14th century is limited. Similar artefacts related to some of the Bulgarian tsars have not been found yet. A significant number of the published molybdobulls is not very well preserved, and this inevitably hinders the efforts to interpret their content. The future discovery of less damaged lead seals will allow to obtain more complete information from these sources about the medieval Bulgarian history. This paper presents substantial arguments regarding the attribution and the dating of some of the published seals of the Second Bulgarian Tsardom early rulers as well as their authenticity. Previous suggestions can be confirmed and some new ones can be made based on recently discovered molybdobulls and the existing studies on these monuments.
