Abstract

The present brief paper discusses the coins from the rare coin issue of the last Thracian king Rhoemetalces III and emperor Caligula known as type RPC I, 1722 (Fig. 1). Their typology and the historical environment in which they were struck have been examined. A detailed listing of the known 33 examples of this rare coin type is given. It is emphasised that they represent a special, commemorative issue minted on the occasion of the coronation (investiture) of the Thracian king at Rome in 38 AD. It is clarified that they were equivalent in denomination to one Roman sestertius. It is pointed out that they are also the epilogue of the late Thracian royal coinage.
