Abstract

The largest currently known hoard of silver coins of the Tarnovo Tsar John (Ivan) Shishman (1371 – 1393) is published here. It was found in 1937 in the region of Ruse. A total of 4,455 coins have been received from it in the National History Museum – Sofia. This very large and very homogeneous coin hoard was hidden in the ground towards the end of the reign of the last Bulgarian tsar, ruler of the Kingdom of Tarnovo, John (Ivan) Shishman. Most probably, its hiding took place in connection with the Ottoman invasion of the northern regions of the Shishman state, which followed the fall of the capital city of Tarnovo in 1393 and led to their final conquest.
