Abstract

The silver coins of the largest denomination – the tetradrachms of the Hellenic apoikia on the western coast of the Black Sea – Apollonia Pontica, have been a constant challenge for scholars for many years. These coins have provided more questions than answers, especially in terms of chronology. In recent years, a large number of tetradrachms with different names of coinage magistrates have been published, some of which have become known to science for the first time. The subject of this article are two new and unknown tetradrachms that recently appeared at auctions, but have gone unnoticed in the most recent publications on this topic. One tetradrachm bears the hitherto completely unknown name of a coinage magistrate and as a name in general in the Hellenic world – ΜΑΡΙΝΩΣ. The other tetradrachm bears the name ΗΓΗΣΙΔΗΜΟΣ, known so far, but in fact, this tetradrachm bears the name of another and different coinage magistrate with such a name, identified here as Hegesidemos I.
