The collection of the National Museum of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia contains 24 coins imitating the silver tetradrachms and drachms of Philip III Arrhidaeus. Their obverse depicts Heracles with a lion’s skin, to the right, and on the reverse – Zeus Aetophoros on a throne, to the left. They are all of unknown place of discovery. Thirteen of them are imitations of tetradrachms, and the rest – of drachms. Imitative coinage during the Hellenistic period raises many questions that have not yet been answered. One of the reasons is the few published hoards and single coins from this period. The aim of this article is to introduce this type of coins from NAIM – BAS fund into scientific circulation.
