The ancient and medieval fortress of Bozhenishki Urvich has been known in the scientific community for more than 100 years after registering the inscription of Sevast Ognyan, carved on a rock above the village of Bozhenitsa, originally published by Petar Mutafchiev. Archaeological studies of the site were carried out half a century later, in the 1970s and 1980s. In almost 20 years of research, over 1400 coins were recorded without modern metal detecting equipment. Over 1,300 coins can be dated to the 14th century period, and fewer than 100 have been determined by researchers to be Late Antique, dating to the 4th – 6th century. In 2023 – 2024, research was renewed, with new numismatic material recorded. A more detailed study of the Late Antique coins from this site has not been undertaken.
