The paper, written within the framework of the scientific project “Corpus Inscriptionum Rossicarum”, is devoted to the publication of a white stone tombstone with an epitaph to Ivan Andreevich Buturlin. The monument was found in situ in 2007 during archaeological observations in the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius to the east of the southern porch of the Dormition Cathedral. Under the slab was partially cleared the undisturbed burial of an adult male, whose fifth cervical vertebrae had been chopped, and all the teeth on the lower jaw and the front teeth on the upper jaw had been knocked out approximately three months before his death. The epitaph made it possible to identify the discovered remains with the Bolyar Ivan Andreyevich Buturlin, who was executed on a case of ‘treason’ against the Archbishop of Novgorod Leonid, and to establish that he was executed on 22 October 1575, which was unknown from other sources. Thus, the epitaph under study together with archaeological, annalistic, hagiographic, and commemorative sources provides, important material for understanding the events of the internal political history of Russia in the last decade of Ivan the Terrible’s reign.
